A 28-day randomized trial compared daily breathing protocols
A 2023 randomized remote trial enrolled 108 adults who practiced 5 minutes of daily breathwork (cyclic sighing, box breathing, or cyclic hyperventilation) or mindfulness meditation over 28 days. Respiratory patterns and daily affect were tracked.
Participants in the cyclic sighing group demonstrated the highest daily increase in positive affect and greater reduction in resting respiratory rate compared to mindfulness meditation. The study tested a 5-minute daily dose rather than a two-minute acute intervention.
